Harriet Smith is a character in Jane Austen’s novel Emma. She is described as a pretty, amiable young woman who has been raised in poverty and is socially below the class of the other characters in the novel. Emma, the main character, takes Harriet under her wing and attempts to mold her into a more refined woman. However, this causes some problems as Emma’s attempts to find a suitable husband for Harriet lead to misunderstandings and complications in their relationships. Despite these struggles, by the end of the novel Harriet is happily married to a farmer named Robert Martin.
